Port au Port No.1's discovery has spawned speculative staking of
the Shelf Sequence of the Long Range Fold Belt. This preliminary rush
is based on Port au Port No. 1 producing from the "Shelf Sequence" by
correlating the well with the below map. The geochemical and tectonic
lessons from Hunt's discovery should direct exploration efforts.
About 610 mya North America rifted from Europe and Africa, making
the Lapetus Ocean in the southern hemisphere. This warm tropical sea
deposited a limestone bank and deepwater shales. Interfingering and
later compression of the Lapetus Ocean has brought the kerogen rich
shales in proximity to limestone reservoir.
